Minister McHugh said:
"Everyone learns better when the material is engaging and relevant, and when the methods of learning are enjoyable. The new curriculum recognises teachers as skilled professionals making key decisions about teaching and learning, while providing the tools and support that they need to ensure our children can grow and develop, and are prepared for their next stage in their education and beyond."
What an amazing statement! This makes me wonder about the daily learning environment in Irish primary schools, where children spend most of their day sitting in front of work books, note books and screens to meet curriculum outcomes and inquire knowledge which will be reproduced in tests throughout the years.
As stated in a Whole School Evaluation Report of a Dublin 15 primary school " The quality of pupils' learning experiences is enriched and Pupils' demonstration of high levels of enjoyment and participation in their learning experiences by a range of cultural and artistic activities within the school as well as use of the stimulating outdoor environment."
Who would not like their children to experience high quality in learning experiences, enjoyment and participation in their learning?
Providing education through Outdoor Education enables children to experience joyful, engaging and motivational learning to meet expected curriculum outcomes. This is the way forward in a society where people start to analyse and question an education system that has stayed the same, while the lives of people, environment, technology etc. has hugely developed and changed. Therefore, what is holding us back to not use a pedagogy and teaching strategy that engages, includes, motivates children to learn about the important things in life?
Lets get started on the journey of Outdoor Education in Irish Primary Schools 2019.
